EchicetinEchicetin is a C-type lectin-like protein isolated from the venom of the saw-Scaled viper (Echis carinatus) acting as agonist/antagonist of platelet receptors. Echicetin may provide new insights into platelet funcion. Echicetin is a C-type lectin from Echis carinatus that binds to platelet glycoprotein Ibá and blocks von Willebrand factor and thrombin binding. It can be used either to block these GPIbá functions or, if labelled with 125I or biotin or fluorescein isothiocyanate, to measure GPIbá expression levels. In the presence of plasma, echicetin agglutinates platelets via GPIbá and IgM and can be used to assess GPIbá expression levels directly, independently of von Willebrand factor levels function. |
